Okinawan Kempo

Okinawan Kempo, also known as Ryukyu Kempo, is a traditional martial art originating from Okinawa, an island in the Ryukyu archipelago in Japan. It is a combat system that combines techniques of strikes, blocks, kicks, and throws, aimed at effective self-defense. Okinawan Kempo is renowned for its practicality and effectiveness in real-life threat situations.

Like many traditional martial arts from Okinawa, Ryukyu Kempo emerged from the fusion of local techniques with influences from Chinese martial arts.

A characteristic feature of Okinawan Kempo is its strong emphasis on bunkai, the analysis and interpretation of techniques contained in kata (set sequences of movements and forms). Kata form the foundation of training, and understanding them, as well as applying them in practical situations, is a crucial element of the system. Another important aspect is kumite – in its traditional form, Bogu Kumite, it is a type of sparring in which practitioners wear special protective gear (called bogu) to train full-contact techniques safely. Additionally, Ryukyu Kempo also includes training with traditional weapons (kobudo), such as the bo (long staff), jo (short staff), sai (tridents), nunchaku, or tonfa.

Taika Oyata

Taika Oyata 10 Dan RyuTe

Taika Seiyu Oyata (1928–2012) was a distinguished martial arts master from Okinawa, regarded as one of the most important contemporary teachers of Okinawan Kempo. He was the founder of the RyuTe style, which emphasized self-defense, precise striking techniques aimed at vital points (known as kyusho-jutsu), and Kobudo (traditional weapons arts).

Oyata was a personal student of two masters who belonged to the 19th-century warrior class—individuals who were nearly impossible to encounter on Okinawa after World War II. They passed on essential knowledge, which became the foundation of Oyata's future combat system.

In later years, Taika Oyata studied under Shigeru Nakamura, the founder of Okinawa Kenpo Karate and co-creator of the Bogu Kumite format, and also collaborated with Seikichi Uehara, a renowned expert in traditional Okinawan Kempo. Through these extensive experiences, Oyata developed his system, focusing on unarmed combat, vital point striking, and opponent control. He was also a highly skilled practitioner and teacher of Bogu Kumite. Notably, one of his students at his Okinawa dojo was the renowned Joe Lewis.

Oyata's system gained worldwide recognition, and his influence on Okinawan Kempo remains significant among students and instructors globally.
